Chapter 1

The Module 1 section of “The Internet” covers basic information to refresh readers for future development on incoming chapters. It reviews navigating links, the browser toolbar, private browsing, etc. By far, the most stand-out part of this chapter was the mention and explanation of cookies. Cookies are essential to understand as they appear on most websites with the options to “reject all,” “accept some,” or “accept all.” I vaguely understood cookies before but always wondered what the point of rejecting cookies was if it meant you could not access the website and also which cookies would be accepted if you went the middle route option. Now that I read the explanation, I understand that “accepting some” means blocking first and third-party cookies. First-party cookies are information gathered about you from the website you visited that is given to the website directly. Third-party cookies are information gathered from you and stored by servers outside the website you’re on. Usually, this is used for advertising and gaining an idea of what you’re interested in. This module, though a rather simplistic chapter, built a solid foundation on topics that are essential for the understanding of the Internet and how to maneuver it.
